In the past I have been involved in several European and National Research Projects. An indicative list is shown below:

  • RAPP (Robotic Applications for Delivering Smart User Empowering Applications) was a 3-year project (2013-2016) that provided an open source software platform to support the creation and delivery of Robotic Applications (RApps), which, in turn, are expected to increase the versatility and utility of robots. The emphasis of this project was on applications that will enable robots to understand and respond to the intentions and needs of people at risk of exclusion, especially the elderly.

Microme logo
  • Microme is a resource for bacterial metabolism, whose aim is to support the large scale inference of metabolic flux directly from genome sequence. It is populated with data generated by direct import from external sources and by automatic inference from these seed data onto additional genomes; data is subject to quality assurance (i.e. for chemical balance, consistency of cross-references, and ultimately, for their ability to define a viable model mathematically and their consistency with experimental evidence), and revised manually as appropriate. Microme ultimately provides an infrastructure for the integration of a curated repository of reference pathways and reactions, genome-scale constraint-based models, and downstream applications in comparative genomics and biotechnology.

  • ASSIST (Association Studies Assisted by Inference and Semantic Technologies) facilitates the research for cervical cancer through a system that virtually unifies multiple patient record repositories, physically located in different medical centres or hospitals. To this end, innovative, knowledge-intensive semantic modelling, fuzzy inferencing and data mining techniques have been developed. ASSIST’s inference engine translates medical concepts into syntactic values that legacy systems may perceive and support the process of evaluating medical hypotheses and contacting association studies.
